Patty Baldwin owns All Biz Services, a website development and hosting
business.
She is also currently working on a new Internet project - An Online
Store marketing authentic Native American Artwork indigenous to New Mexico,
where she lives.
First and foremost,
Patty is an entrepreneur. Throughout her career, her focus has been sales and
marketing. Specifically, her forte is assisting small to medium size
businesses succeed during start-up and ongoing promotion.
Every position that she
has chosen to involve herself with has required communication skills.
Patty has a passion for
teaching others how to communicate more effectively.
Patty has an impressive
array of experience in Corporate America:
- Department of HEW,
Social Security Administration
- Civilian Employee,
United States Air Force
- Assistant Executive
Director, SMV Developers, Industrial Development
- Assistant to City
Manager, Santa Maria, California
- Co-owner
construction firm
- Executive Director,
Mid-Columbia Home Builders Association
- Business Manager,
Bayliss Broadcasting
- Vice President,
Better Business Bureau of New Mexico
- Regional Manager,
National Council of Better Business Bureaus
- Advertising
Director, The Independent Weekly Newspaper
- Successful Network
Marketer
While she enjoyed her
position with the Better Business Bureau, the travel and commute from her home
base in the southwest began to take it's toll. After almost 15 years in
the BBB, she left to return to sunnier climes.
After leaving the non-profit arena, her
experience led her to the field of small business promotion and advertising.
She became the advertising director for a local start-up community newspaper.
In six months the paper grew from a bi-weekly to a weekly publication,
increasing revenues by over 400%!
Patty has also
developed a successful network marketing organization specializing in
communications.
Currently, Patty works
from home, operating several successful online businesses. Her experience
serves as a testimonial to anyone who chooses to transition from the standard
corporate world to working at home.
Patty says: "I
firmly believe that the Internet is making the largest change to the way
business is being and will be done in the future. Companies ignoring this
paradigm shift will simply be left behind and many will go out of business."
I decided to
interview Patty and find out a little bit more about this accomplished
entrepreneur...
Well
Dave, I had pretty much broken through the so-called "glass
ceiling" in my chosen career field. There was nowhere else to go and
I was pretty much burned out on the corporate scene.
- What are the benefits to you ?
Flexibility and
freedom. It's really great to work in your nightgown!
- What types of business are you in
now ?
I still direct the
marketing and sales activity for a small weekly newspaper. Have a good
staff in place and it only requires a few hours a week. The majority of my
time is spent with my online businesses, of which I have several. Web site
development and hosting, several affiliate programs and my current project is
building an Online Store marketing some of the authentic Native American artwork
available here in the Southwest.
- What would you say to people
considering starting their own Home Based Business ?
Define your passion. It's
very easy to try and force a square peg into a round hole, especially on the
Internet. Whatever it is that you love to do, work that into your
design for a home-based business and avoid the so-called "get
rich quick"
syndrome.
- What has been one of your
favorite Home Based Business"stories" or anecdotes ?
My favorite story
gives me a chuckle each time I repeat it. I had been communicating with a
local business person about building a web site for him. We had spoken
several times over the phone discussing his various needs and he suggested we
meet for lunch. I arrived at the restaurant about 10 minutes early and was
seated. After waiting for about 20 minutes, the waitress approached me,
leading a fellow who had been sitting across the restaurant. She asked if
I was waiting for someone, and I responded affirmatively. She stepped
aside and this gentleman's jaw dropped, his eyes got wide and out of his mouth
popped, "But you're too old, you can't be Patty?" Of course, he
was extremely embarrassed at blurting out what was obviously going through his
mind and I assured him there was no reason to feel badly about being honest.
His assumption was that if the work had to do with computers, I must be a
youngster.
The moral?
Even Grandmas can build a business online!
By the way, I got the order!
Thanks for offering your story,
Patty. I'm sure it will be an encouragement to people!
